Dynamics and Leadership of Online Discussion: A Model of Collaborative Discourse in Computer Conferencing

This paper presents a conceptual study of collaborative discourse in computer conferencing for adult education. The purpose of the study is to examine the dynamics of text based asynchronous discussion, the role of online leadership, and the relationship between them. Based on the syntheses of existing literature on collaborative inquiry in computer conferencing and the roles of online teachers, and preliminary analyses of nine web-based public seminars offered for professional educators, this study proposes a model of collaborative discourse that depicts the rich dynamics of communication, intellectual engagement, and the intrinsic motives for participation in computer conferencing. The role of online leadership is explained in the model in term of the use of moderating functions to bring together these aspects of the online educational experience. The paper concludes with a description of this study’s potential contributions to the understanding and practice of online learning, and a discussion of future work.
